Climate Smart Story: Sylvis Environmental

Climate Smart certified since 2012, SYLVIS Environmental is a leading Canadian residuals management consulting and contracting firm. Sylvis staff are participating in Climate Smart trainings in both BC and Alberta, as part of the City of Edmonton’s Corporate Climate Leaders Program and Change for Climate initiative here. Sylvis has made impressive strides in reducing GHG emissions from business travel. From the 2012 baseline through 2017, SYLVIS reduced its emissions by 31% overall, including 27% for air and ferry travel, which resulted in a significant financial benefit. Learn more here.

I am writing to let you know that at the end of June, I will be stepping away from my day-to-day role as Vice President and Training Manager. It has been an incredible ten years helping Climate Smart grow from a pilot program at Ecotrust Canada, into a separate start-up, and now into a flourishing social enterprise with enormous potential. VANCOUVER — As governments turn over rocks in search of opportunities to cut carbon emissions, a new report concludes that a leading solution may be hidden in plain sight.

Canada’s 1.2+ million small- and medium-sized businesses have direct control over roughly 200 million tonnes of carbon pollution, the same amount produced each year by every car, truck, train, plane, and ship in the country, the report finds. With coaching and support, these businesses could significantly shrink Canada’s overall carbon footprint, its authors conclude.
