Wednesday September 28, 2016 — The Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Climate CoLab today awarded Vancouver, B.C. company Climate Smart the Grand Prize in a global competition for climate change-fighting innovations.

The institute’s Climate CoLab recognized the company’s Business Energy and Emissions Profile (BEEP) Dashboard, a data visualization tool it developed to help cities create more effective carbon-reduction programs. The prize comes with a USD$10,000 cash award.

Climate Smart president and cofounder Elizabeth Sheehan accepted the award at a ceremony today at the Crowds & Climate Conference in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

In August, a panel of judges at MIT’s Climate CoLab—and thousands of online voters—named the company’s tool a winner in both Judges’ Choice and Popular Choice awards in its Smart Zero Carbon Cities competition.

That put Climate Smart, along with 24 other firms, in the running for today’s Grand Prize.

“Cities are the front lines in the climate challenge, yet often have limited resources. Our software helps them get the most bang for their buck, so they can be more effective in their work. We’re deeply humbled and inspired by this recognition,” said Sheehan.

The BEEP Dashboard graphically projects a given city’s energy usage and carbon emissions by industry and business type. Its interactive mapping interface allows community leaders to quickly identify opportunities to cut greenhouse gases and more effectively engage with the private sector.

To date, Climate Smart has created BEEPs for nine municipalities and neighbourhoods across B.C. and Ontario.

“We share this honour with our local government partners, the B.C. Climate Action Secretariat, and above all, the hundreds of businesses that are innovating, taking action, and leading us towards a low carbon economy by investing in Climate Smart certification,” added Sheehan.

About Climate Smart: Climate Smart Businesses Inc. (climatesmartbusiness.com) helps companies track, measure, and profitably reduce their carbon emissions. Since 2007, the company has helped more than 800 businesses cut their emissions and associated costs through training, software, support, and certification.
