CS biz Frogbox lands Dragons’ Den deal!

Climate Smart business Frogbox made a visit to the CBC’s Dragons’ Den last night! A couple of us were lucky enough to join the Frogbox crew at their viewing party, where co-founder Doug Burgoyne and Vancouver GM Mathieson McRae were all smiles!

We’re big fans of Frogbox. I’ve used them twice, our president Elizabeth has used them, and we even used them for our office move last year. They did the Climate Smart training program in 2009 and have continued measuring their GHG emissions ever since. They’ve even come in to speak at our training sessions about their experience!

I’m also a huge fan of CBC’s Dragons’ Den! First as a casual-yet-business-savvy viewer, then as a business school student, and now as an MBA grad, I have always loved watching the pitches and — even moreso — the Dragons’ responses!

So last night was a dream come true for me! Frogbox + Dragons’ Den = AWESOME!

Doug came out asking for a $200,000 investment, and he got it! Perhaps more importantly, he got two fantastic partners in Jim Treliving, owner of Boston Pizza and Mr. Lube (AKA The Franchise Baron), and W. Brett Wilson, chairman of Prairie Merchant, entrepreneur and philanthropist (AKA The Nice Guy). (Dragon Arlene Dickinson was also in on the deal in the den, but didn’t end up closing. You can watch the whole thing here–it’s the very last segment.)

We are so happy to see a business leader who has such a strong environmental mission and who is taking such leadership on greenhouse gas management get up in front of five extremely critical investors and successfully sell himself as simply a great business. Not a “green” business, just a great business. Now we’re not saying that Frogbox isn’t a green business — of course they are!! — the important thing here is that their “greenness” seemed practically irrelevant to the deal. It was just a strong business with strong numbers and strong potential, and all five dragons bit! (Doug had three separate offers on the table, involving all five dragons.)

Congratulations to Doug and the whole Frogbox team! Thanks for proving that green business can be great business.
